Projects

  • Society against hate

    In the period from May 1, 2010 to April 30, 2011 Open Republic will implement the project entitled “Society against hate".
    Under this project, we will:
    - examine activity of the prosecuting bodies and judicial bodies aimed at counteracting ethnic, race, and religious hate manifested in words and acts;
    - register acts of hate and discrimination against representatives of national, ethnic, religious, cultural, sexual and other minorities, and against material evidence of their culture (e.g. vandalism at the cemeteries);
    - examine, on continuous basis, whether applicable authorities properly react to the aforementioned acts of hate;
    - intervene in all cases where the national, ethnic, religious, and culture based hate occurs.
    Please, report all and any phenomena that cause your concern to the office of Open Republic: otwarta@otwarta.org or directly to our lawyer: piotrtomaszewski@otwarta.org

    “Society against hate” project is realized thanks to the financial support granted by Trust for Civil Society in the Central and Eastern Europe.

  • Educational program prepared and conducted by OR members

    In the period September - December 2010 Przemysław Wiszniewski and Paweł Kwiecień will conduct 120 hours of antidiscrimination workshops in the Warsaw gymnasia and high schools. These workshops are based on the author lesson scenario. The students will learn about the race, religious discrimination, and discrimination because of sexual orientation; they will be told why each and any manifestation of intolerance should be opposed and why it is worthwhile to get familiarized with and to respect representatives of other cultures and religions.

  • School of openness. Analysis of school textbooks

    In the period 2002 – 2004 we carried out the program School of Openness. The team of reviewers analyzed school textbooks to Polish language, history and knowledge about society from the point of view of respecting the ethnic, religious, and outlook differences. About 80 gymnasium textbooks were subject to reviews (of ca. 150 available on the market). The reviews and summary of analyses will be useful for teachers and educators as the information about available textbooks for humanities. The list of reviewed textbooks and the reviews can be sent upon request (my mail or by e-mail).

  • Together in Europe – Open to others

    In 2007 we accomplished an educational project Together in Europe – Open to Others. The idea of the project was to initiate discussion in educational environment on respect and tolerance between social groups of different races, ethnic origin, religion and outlook, as well as the ways of popularizing these problems at schools. At the same time we examined changes regarding youth – due to globalization and technological development – connected with defining the notion of openness, tolerance, prejudice, and impact of these changes on the functioning in a peer group. The most important activities in the project: development of the scenario of educational classes for the students of gymnasiums and high schools, methodological workshops for teachers preceded by the lectures by specialists, a cycle of educational classes carried out in 25 schools based on the prepared scenarios. The students participating in the project were asked to fill in the questionnaires on the subject of the project. A competition was also organized, which promoted the idea Together in Europe – Open to Others. The project was financed from the funds from the European Social Fund under the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All.
