In memory of the ghetto heroes – for the first time without Marek Edelman

For 65 years on April 19, at noon, aside the official ceremony, Marek Edelman turned up at the Ghetto Heroes Monument and later went to the former Umschlagplatz. He was accompanied by friends, among them Jacek Kuroń, Lechosław Goździk, Bronisław Geremek and all those who wanted to salute the memory of the heroes in a public but very personal manner.

He was also accompanied by his son and daughter with their families. In the recent years the growing number of school students also joined him not only to salute the heroes but also to participate in the lesson of history, sensitivity, and humanity. This event became a symbolic act of Marek Edelman vesting the memory on those who had lost their lives to the next generations and an obligation for those who accompanied him to continue his mission.

This year we will meet at his grave at the Jewish Cemetery and then we will go to the Ghetto Heroes Monument and our usual way – to the monument of Szmul Zygielbojm, to MIła bunker, and finally – to Umschlagplatz.
